Formed in 2003 as a division of the BC Law Institute, CCEL’s objective was to use the law reform ideology behind BCLI and focus on matters involving our aging population. BCLI welcomes updates to money judgments enforcement legislation

BCLI is pleased to mark two legislative developments that will update and modernize the civil enforcement of money judgments in BC. These legal changes will make it easier for parties to collect the money they are owed following a civil judgment. Latest Reconciliation Primers Explore Legal Pluralism

This September marks the 16 year anniversary of the adoption of the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UN Declaration) by the UN General Assembly. In 2019, the BC government committed in the Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act to “take all measures necessary to ensure the laws of British Columbia are consistent with the [UN] Declaration”, in consultation and cooperation with Indigenous peoples. BCLI Remembers Donovan Waters, KC FRSC 1928-2023

BCLI regrets the passing on 9 September 2023 of Donovan W.M. Waters, KC FRSC.  Dr. Waters was an internationally renowned legal scholar, law professor, and practitioner.  As Chair of BCLI’s Trustee Act Modernization Committee, Dr. Waters presided over one of the most influential law reform projects BCLI has conducted, and also the lengthiest.  The report generated by the BCLI project he led,  A Modern Trustee Act for British Columbia, became the foundation for the Uniform Read more…
