New coming-into-force dates announced for Ontario condo reforms
June 14, 2017

A report has surfaced in Ontario that the ministry of government and consumer services has announced new dates on which provisions of the Protecting Condominium Owners Act, 2015 (PDF), are projected to come into force.
The Protecting Condominium Owners Act, 2015, is the fruit of a major law-reform initiative in Ontario. It significantly amends Ontario’s Condominium Act, 1998, establishes a new Condominium Management Regulatory Authority of Ontario, and creates a new Condominium Authority of Ontario and dispute-resolution system.
The key dates appear to be:
- 1 September 2017: condominium authority designated; oversight of tribunal begins;
- 1 November 2017: major governance changes for Condominium Act, 1998, come into effect; management regulatory authority and licensing of condominium managers operational;
- 1 February 2018: remainder of Condominium Management Services Act, 2015, in force.
For more detail, see this recently updated list of Ontario proclamations (search: “Protecting Condominium Owners Act, 2015”), which gives the following dates on which provisions of the Protecting Condominium Owners Act, 2015, are planned to come into force. (Readers are cautioned that these dates are subject to change.)
